Studland Bay Red Ale is the first entry in our 2025 British Ale series, and the first recipe we’ve released from Alex Trickey, our newest brewer in Kingston. It’s a very traditional Irish Red Ale with some unconventional hops and a certain je ne sais quoi from young spruce.
What You’ll Love About It
A traditional sweet and fruity Irish Red Ale balanced with a touch of young Canadian spruce tips for an herbal, citrus twist. We get aromas of brown sugar caramel, sugar plums, sticky toffee pudding, and yes, spruce, and flavours of English toffee, Sultana raisins, pine needles, and orange curd.
How It's Made
This is about as traditional as it gets from a malt bill, with a series of English malts blended to achieve the red colour we’re after. Alongside the expected EKG hops we’ve added an American bittering hop and German fruit forward hop to get those rich stone fruit notes our favourite English ales offer. Finally, just a hint of young Canadian spruce tips.
Why Is It Called Studland Bay?
Just about everyone at SITW loves English ales, but they’re hard to come by. So we became the change we want to see in the world with a British ale series using the Fuller’s yeast strain. This beer kicks it off, named for a sea port in England that our brewer once enjoyed a vacation at.
How To Enjoy It
In a beautiful shaker pint glass at 10-13° Celsius.
Did You Know?
The yeast strain we used for this beer comes from the Fuller's brewery in London, England, and is known for providing rich stone fruit flavours from esters.
