GRAND RIVER OKTOBERFEST LAGER
Brewed to celebrate this year’s Oktoberfest, this is a classic Märzenbier inspired by generations of German brewing tradition. Brilliant amber in colour with a lasting off-white head, it delivers the rich malt character that has made the style synonymous with the arrival of fall.
Expect layers of toasted bread crust, fresh-baked pretzel, biscuit, and light caramel, balanced by subtle floral and spicy noble hop character. Gentle malt sweetness gives way to a smooth, crisp finish, making it the perfect companion for cool evenings, changing leaves, and hearty seasonal fare.
Why is it called a Märzenbier?
“Märzen” is German for March.
Centuries ago in Bavaria, brewing during the hot summer months was risky because warmer temperatures made beer more likely to spoil. Brewers would produce one final batch in March, brewing it slightly stronger and hopping it a little more to help it keep through the summer while it matured in cool cellars and caves.
When autumn arrived, those perfectly conditioned beers were ready to be enjoyed during the harvest season, and eventually became the traditional beer served at Munich’s Oktoberfest.
